My Dissertation Series:Representing politics through magical realism; the study of Isabel Allende the house of the spirit and Ben okri The famished road

The purpose of this dessertation paper is to analyse politics by using magical realism in Ben okri's The Famished road and Isabel Allende The House of the Spirit. On the African continent magical realism and post colonialism have gone hand in hand in West and South Africa. Aaron, the Abiku nation of Nigeria, and the king of the unborn dwell in the spirit world and on earth. This is not a traditional coming of age narrative but a magical realist variant. Narrative magic and realism effect the change of order of the values hierarchy, the supernatural exercise control over the natural realism. The magical phenomenon exhales during Dad's unconsciousness which reflects the narratives usage of magic as an human life.
In the novel The House of the Spirit, is a political novel and political into an epic novel of love, magic and fate. Through politics I analyse how to applied magical realism in two novels. Both novel include magical elements as a normal part of the families lives, although the magic in The House of spirits in mostly limited to the mother Clara.
Through two widely accepted novels The Famished Road The House of the Spirit , Ben okri and Isabel Allende tries to show the politics through magical realism.

Problematization of Women’s psyche in ‘In American Brat’ by Bapsi Sidhwa and ‘Jasmin’ by Bharati Mukharjee.
Women, being the most suffered section of the social circle is unfortunately the least expressed and noticed. Their sufferings and troubles are of course double than the men in any society endures. But, it is a bare reality that their efforts and struggles are taken for granted and is considered that they are bound to suffer every miseries that may come up in their lives. The fundamental objective of my dissertation is to analyse the women’s psyche and innermost feelings and battles that women has fought and won in all the ages.
In order to bring forth this objective, I have taken the novels ‘An American Brat’ by Bapsi Sidhwa and Bharati Mukharjee’s ‘Jasmin’. The two novels being diasporic fictious reflects the problems of migration suffered. Bapsi Sidhwa has spoken about the problems that a 16 year old girl has suffered where as ‘Jasmin’ deals with the struggles of an elderly lady. My dissertation is thus an attempt to portray the resistance of women of different ages.

Culture makes people understand each other better. It reflects time and history with utmost detail. Every cultural identity is a true portrayal of the time that it reverberates. My dissertation is aimed to highlight the cultural changes and impact that can be seen as time moves on from the first half of the twentieth century to the post modern, sophisticated twenty first century. In order to bring forth the shift in time and culture, I have taken Arthur Miller’s ‘Death of a salesman’ and Lal Jose’s ‘Immanuel’.

To conclude with, I would also like to focus on the cultural barriers and borders that seperates the two diverse societies.

China is often considered as a land of spectacle: the Great wall and the scenes of clay making made people look at China with awe and wonder. The fundamental objective of my dissertation is not to re-represent the common notions of China but to ponder over the unknown; the social and cultural space of China that is not known for the general public.
The major concern of the dissertation is to analyse the Chinese elements as shown by Pearl Buck in her novels ‘Novels are Letter from Peking’ and ‘Good Earth’. This opens a way to analyse a picture of China as witnessed by Pearl Buck during her life time. It also opens up several images of the world war and the peculiarities and complexities of family life in the scenario of the world war.
My dissertation thus aims to give voice of the voiceless; the inner most cultural realms and outlook of China.

My Dissertation Series: Fasmina: POLITICS OF ART AND RELIGION IN ORHAN PAMUK’S SNOW AND MY NAME IS RED

FasminaSherinT                                                      Second Semester M.A English                            KAHM Unity Women’s College, Manjeri
Turkish culture is marked in the world history for its intricacies and convolutions in the political, religious and artistic domains.Faith in God and religion had an obtrusive role in the Turkish history since time immemorial. Religion is aforethought and validated as an ideology or collection of beliefs and practices generally agreed by a group of people or sects that helps man to move on in his life. But, once religion is donned in the garb of a political authority, it loses its serenity and intimidates the progression of the nation. Freedom of art and expression too was denied in a society where politicized religion has stood all ears listening to every whisper and murmurs that were spoken and delivered.
The focus of my dissertation is to the ‘corrupted politics’ or ‘corrupted religion’ that resulted out of the assimilation of politics and religion. What made religion in Turkey grow out of its premises as a private sentiment into a political or radical force? Why was one painting chosen over another? Why were some works sidelined? The trouble that afflicts both artistry and spirituality, and thus creates a kinship between them, is the problem of representation and its political consequences. It is to this hidden agenda of spiritual opportunism, the exploitation of spiritual ideas for selfish political interests that I would like to focus with special reference to Orhan Pamuk’s Snow and My Name is Red.
This dissertation also draws its concern to show how power and influence has become the fundamental prerogative and priority of an entire community. Nothing, even art could bestow happiness and satisfaction to a society that longs for the luxuries of political power and authority. It also aims to examine the social and political conflict between secularism and Islamism which is the root cause of the cultural strife that predominates in Turkey. To conclude with, the paper draws a clear picture of modern Turkey that has literally stuck between the past and the future; the secular modernists and the conventional traditionalists who engaged in constant duels to access control over the political attitudes of Turkey.
